What Happened to 94.9 The Vibe?

the-vibe

I started at Cumulus Media awhile back, I have had more fun at that job than any other in most of my years of living on this planet. Radio personalities and DJ’s are like no other people you will ever meet. Sincere, caring, unique and their talents are in my opinion underestimated.

I went into work last weekend and was approached by one of the DJ’s that represented The Vibe, that’s when the news hit me (granted it was late news). This person told me that without any notice the station changed overnight to pop format. They weren’t given so much as a warning, a memo, nothing!

Everyone on the desk-jockey side (see what I did there) the higher-ups, the promotions employees, they all knew this was coming down–except for 94.9’s DJ’s themselves. The person (my source) who I cannot reveal their name at this time was hurt. I could see it in their eyes, hurt that a station which was their lives work changed so quickly overnight into another top 40 station. Now, why would the only classic hip-hop station in Utah switch to pop? Now the only “rap” station around is U92. If I was a business owner, this wouldn’t make sense. Why give up one of only two prominent hip-hop FM station in the state? After asking around (other DJ’s from other stations), I found out the ratings for 94.9 The Vibe were NOT doing good. Over the first few quarters great, then they just dropped, and never recovered. **I haven’t seen any evidence to support that claim–basically, this was an excuse. It had to do with licensing issues. Cumulus wasn’t willing to fork over lic. renewal fees, why do that when you can just turn The Vibe into a pop station and use current songs from B 98.7 and other stations that already have rights to play top 40 songs?

94.9 The Vibes Facebook page blew up almost immediately, mostly with confusion and frustration. No press release, no explanation, no memo not even a Facebook post from Cumulus Salt Lake.

“Without handing everyone our playbook, I think listeners will feel very quickly the difference between POWER 94.9 and every other station in SALT LAKE CITY – and love what they hear.” -RICK VAUGHN Cumulus Salt Lake

Clearly, there was a reason for the change, but who was in charge of the transition? The Hispanic population is the fastest growing population in the US, not only that but nearly 3,000 people of Tongan descent live in Salt Lake City alone (2011). Classic hip hop catered to these communities, now with a very large hole to fill who will step up to the plate? One thing is for sure, U92 is reaping the benefits of being the ONLY hip-hop/rap station in Utah.

Bad Idea!!! We have enough Pop Stations here! Old school hip hop, R&B was the best type of music. I won’t be listening to Power, we have enough of that music.

Bring back the VIBE. This new power station sucks! There are to many top 40s stations already. Thanks alot for ruining my favorite STATION.. Come on.. Put it back on another channel then.. The music was the best!! Now it sucks.. I deleted the power station.. Its horrible.. Big mistake on taking away the vibe

I’m pissed, old school hip hop is my favorite era of music. I loved that station. I’m utterly disappointed.

It probably upset the “leadership” because their constituents were smiling and remembering the innocence of youth. There is a bunch of weird stuff in radio, 101.5 same thing and I only listened for the second date thing, poof.

I like radio and the old way, ads are ads, now you are just bombarded by stuff and relaxing might be the next great commodity if you can package it.

94.9 was great when it was Z Rock; it has been circling the drain since it switched to Alternative.

I have been so distraught. None of the other radio stations in Utah can fill those shoes. U 92 tries but fails, ” throwback Thursday’s” is not enough. I would concur with the other posters in that we do not need another pop radio station. There were many people at my work who are still really upset about this change.

I remember when the vibe first aired u92 went back to playing more classic hip-hop it was sad to see that u92 only played classic hip-hop just to for the numbers but never for the people.
